Game Rules

  1. Read the Code of Conduct & The Importance of Safety in LARP
  2. Please fill out the Roleplaying Comfort Checklist
  3. Eye of Newt is first and foremost a business. Please do not interact with merchandise unless you intend to purchase it. Their merchandise is not our prop department.
  4. The Storyteller has the discretion to decide what game elements are appropriate for their game. The Storyteller has the right to say “no,” and players should respect that “no.”
  5. Unless you are an active member of law enforcement, no weapons of any kind are allowed at game for the safety of players and bystanders.
  6. Smoking and vaping are to be kept to designated locations only. These locations may vary from site to site, ask a ST if you don't know where these locations are.
  7. Alcoholic beverage consumption is limited to two drinks at most during game if the venue has a cash bar. No outside alcoholic beverages are permitted otherwise.
  8. No drugs, including marijuana, without a medical card.
  9. Be mindful of others. Sometimes game may enter into spaces that have people who are not playing (ex: hotel lobbies, outdoors, etc).
  10. Treat everyone with respect. Absolutely no harassment, witch hunting, sexism, racism, or hate speech will be tolerated. "It's what my character would do" is not a valid reason.
  11. If you see something against the rules or something that makes you feel unsafe, let staff know. We want this to be a welcoming space!
  12. Due to adult themes and languages, those under the age of 18 will not be permitted in Central Illinois by Night game spaces or at hosted events.
  13. Have fun!

House Rules

The Clans

  • Per Jason Herman (Writer and Developer for Laws of the Night) on the BNS Discord on July 26th, 2024: Passive Disciplines do not trigger the Salubri Bane.

Character Generation & Progression

  • Character creation and character options are limited to what is outlined in Laws of the Night 5th Edition.
  • New characters start with an additional 100 experience points (in addition to the 20 experience points listed in the book, for a total of 120 experience points).
  • In the event of character death or retirement, new characters will receive 50% of their earned experience (rounded down) in addition to their starting experience.
  • Existing Darkness Emergent Player Characters will be allowed at their experience point totals at the start of Darkness Emergent Chicago - The City of Big Shoulders (a maximum of 320 total experience points). A copy of the approval email from a Darkness Emergent Concierge must be forwarded to cibynight@googlegroups.com no later than one (1) week prior to play. This will be treated as starting experience and not earned experience for the purposes of making new player characters.
  • Characters that have died during a Darkness Emergent event are assumed to have died in Central Illinois by Night.
  • Further experience points awarded from Darkness Emergent will not apply towards Central Illinois by Night Player Characters.
  • Five (5) Experience Points are awarded monthly at the conclusion of each game.
  • Experience Point Spends must be emailed to cibynight@googlegroups.com, with the subject line being your character name, no later than one (1) week before game to provide staff with enough time to approve the spend, update your character sheet, and print off an updated copy of your sheet. While not required, it is suggested you keep a copy of your Experience Point Spend emails for your protection.
  • Experience Point Spends cannot be made in person.

Core Systems

  • Downtime Actions (Laws of the Night, page 103) must either be submitted by email to cibynight@googlegroups.com or submitted via your Player Room on Discord, no later than one (1) week before game to provide staff with enough time to respond to your Downtime Actions.

Dramatic Systems

Hunger
  • Players automatically begin play with Hunger each session as outlined in Laws of the Night, page 116.
  • Rouse Tests may be required at the start of each game session as outlined in Laws of the Night, page 122. If a Player chooses to use one of their Downtime Actions to feed, or chooses to utilize one of their expenditures of Herd or the Haven: Zoo Advantage they may enter play without making the Rouse Test.
Blood Potency
  • Vampires with Blood Potency 0 can Rouse to Mend 1 point of Normal damage per the chart on page 120. The Thin Blood Flaw Mortal Frailty prevents you from rousing your blood to heal and it is my opinion that Blood Potency 0 on page 118 should have read as "You may Rouse your Blood once a turn to mend one point of Normal Damage unless you possess the Thin-Blood Flaw: Mortal Frailty" rather than "You may Rouse your Blood once a turn to mend one point of Normal Damage if you possess the Thin-Blood Merit: Vampiric Resilience."

Backgrounds

Fame
  • Fame: Star Power is not permitted in this game.
Resources
  • For ease of bookkeeping and to prevent abuse, disposable income from the Resources Background should only be utilized during Downtime. Whether or not it will be considered a use of a Downtime Action will be Storyteller Discretion.
  • Any funds that exchange hands must be used during the downtime period that they are obtained. This is to ensure disposable income is unable to "carry over" by gifting the funds to other characters.
  • Item cards for cash will not be granted for values in excess of $15,000 (the maximum amount obtainable through the Cash Money Advantage). Any item cards for cash will have an expiration date of the following game session.
  • The money from the Resources Advantage Cash Money is only available during game.
  • Characters with three dots in a Mask may make a Static Test at a difficulty 3 against their dots in Resources to attempt to acquire a loan for a large purchase. On a Success, the character is able to secure a loan without any difficulty. On a Failure, the Mask is burned and a new one must be made by a Cobbler. Monthly payments will be calculated at a 7% APR and as a 30 year loan. Your resources will be reduced by one dot until the Storytelling team has determine the loan has been paid. Example: Bob has Resources 3 and wants to take out a loan for $2 Million. He succeeds in the static test and secures the loan under one of his Masks. His monthly payment is $13,306.05. Bob's Resources will be reduced by one dot for 28 months to reflect $80,000 payments each month. After 28 months, Bob's Resources will return to their normal value.

Vampire Society

Your Crew: Coteries & Gangs
Territory

A coterie has a free pool of dots equal to two times the number of characters within it, to a maximum of 10 dots.

Please note: This is a living document and may change. The Storytelling Staff will endeavor to make everyone aware when these changes occur by posting on this website, and through Discord in the Storyteller Announcements channel.
